Her first, the AFI Award winner La Spagnola, convinced Coetzee she could reproduce the themes and nuances of his book on screen.
"He is perhaps this generation's greatest writer and I had to come up with a script that he approved," said Monticelli.
"But I thought the book was so perfect that I didn't want to bastardise anything." She received several offers for the script from international companies, but decided to make the film herself, with her husband, Steve Jacobs, as director.
They sent the script to the Hollywood heavyweight John Malkovich, who agreed to play its lead character, a professor living on his daughter's farm in post-apartheid South Africa.
"I've always been proud of the film, but it's particularly nice when other writers embrace and acknowledge you," she said.
The film, which will open next month at the Toronto International Film Festival, is Monticelli's second screenplay.
